ATHENS, Texas - Approximately 5,000 people, event organizers estimated, converged today in a remarkably peaceful and strident-free gathering at the county courthouse in Athens. The throng gathered at a noon rally to support Henderson County commissioners in their decision to display a nativity scene at the county courthouse in Athens.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation of Madison, Wis. Had notified the commissioners in this East Texas county on Dec. 5 that their display of the nativity was illegal and called for its removal from the courthouse property.
